Prelude to Up Spirits

Preface

Long referred to as the ‘demon’ rum it has nevertheless been used for hundreds of years to discourage the ravages of cold, wet, lack of sleep and depression along with most other maladies faced by serving men. Rum rose to prominence because it did not ‘turn’ or ‘go off’ as beer and wine did. Our Facebook entry regarding the location of the rum stores aboard HMCS Ojibwa jogged the memory of Jim ‘Lucky’ Gordon – and helps us understand the nickname ‘Lucky’.

Set Up

Our original website included a Photo of the Day feature. On Wednesday, March 11, 2015, the Photo of the Day was a picture of a torpedo being loaded aboard HMCS OJIBWA.

Alongside in the background was a large ship. This took former submariner Jim 'Lucky' Gordon on a trip down memory lane. Before you follow him there, it will help to know that a 'target' to a submariner is any surface ship and a 'skimmer' is someone who sails on a surface ship.

No Comfy Chairs on Oberon Class Submarines

By Jim 'Lucky' Gordon
We sat on seat lockers in the sound room, radar room, radio room and in many other spaces in the boat. They were all very much the same; mostly the same height and depth with various lengths designed to fit in a particular space and not interfere with access to important equipment, valves etc. They also held spare gear, maintenance publications, personal gear, etc.. There was little consideration to comfort or ergonomics. Veterans’ Affairs has accepted that spinal problems can be partially attributed to long watches sitting precariously on those seat lockers.

To Blow or Not To Blow

One time while snorting in rough weather continually drawing full vacuums and then immediately breaking the vacuum when the swell went by, I was suffering from a cold with bad nasal congestion. I had a hard time clearing my ears, something I normally did naturally like most everyone else even in our sleep. I woke up suddenly one time in pain with tremendous pressure, "or was it vacuum", on my ears. I didn't know whether to suck or blow. So I gripped my nose and gave it my best blow.

Ear Wagging

Deafness: Legacy of the Deep

When I was Formation Chief working for Admiral Garnet, he also wore the same model hearing aids that I did. They had volume adjust buttons on them that were operated by pressing your thumb on the button while the hearing aid was in your ear and twisting it one way or the other for volume. Almost like the rude gesture of sticking your thumbs in your ears and wagging your hands at someone.

Attack Well a Magnet for Stuff

By Jim 'Lucky' Gordon
The attack well was a magnet for anything that fell off the chart table at sea. I was small and agile and able to quickly drop down into the well and then shimmy back up and out. So I often got the call. It was a bit dangerous due to a reluctance to put the peep stick on its’ pins to ensure it wouldn’t collapse back into the well if hydraulic pressure was lost. If a tot was issued for that particular task I would have been inebriated half the time.

Dress Sense or Lack Thereof

Ours Not to Reason Why

As a matter of interest, the Navy formally changed from winter dress to summer dress regulations 1 May. (The date really varied from 15 April to 15 May depending on the Commander of the day.) And back into winter dress regulations end on October. It did not matter if winter persisted into early June. All items of winter rig, great coat, gloves, over shows, and black jerseys were not to be worn during "summer dress period"
